Lessons from Sharing the Story of My (Possibly) Gay 6-Year-Old Son  / Amelia.

Huffington Post Gay Voices 03-10-2011
bron: Huffington Post Gay Voices 03-10-2011
samenvatting: Amelia wrote an essay about her oldest son and his love of a popular gay television character, Glee's Blaine, and how this crush led to him telling her he wanted to kiss boys, not girls. She naively posted it to a blog, thinking some fans of the show might think it was cute. Within 24 hours it had been reposted and "liked" over 30,000 times on the blog's website. It wasn't long before messages started flooding in, other websites began posting it and people were commenting. The response was overwhelming positive. What she thought was a simple story about her kid and her family had clearly stuck a chord with a lot of people.

HIV/AIDS, Social Capital, and Online Social Networks  / Bruce E. Drushel.

Journal of Homosexuality, 60 (2013) 8 (aug), p. 1230-1249
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 60 (2013) 8 (aug), p. 1230-1249
samenvatting: The prospects for online social networks as sites of information-gathering and affiliation for persons with AIDS and others concerned about HIV/AIDS not only represent the latest development in a trend toward circumventing traditional media and official information sources, but also may offer hope for a revitalization of HIV/AIDS discourse in the public sphere. This article provides an overview of three decades of information-seeking on the pandemic and its social and personal implications, as well as case studies of three examples of social networking surrounding HIV/AIDS. It finds preliminary evidence of the formation of strong and weak ties as described in Social Network Theory and suggests that the online accumulation of social capital by opinion leaders could facilitate dissemination of messages on HIV/AIDS awareness and testing. Online Networks as a Venue for Social Support : A Qualitative Study of Married Bisexual Men in Taiwan  / Cheng-Nan Hou, Hung-Yi Lu.

Journal of Homosexuality, 60 (2013) 9 (sep), p. 1280-1296
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 60 (2013) 9 (sep), p. 1280-1296
samenvatting: Online networks have become a critical venue for bisexual males to communicate with each other and solicit social support. This study reports qualitative feedback gathered from 12 married Taiwanese bisexual men about online social support in their daily lives. The analysis of interviews reveal that online social support provides participants with opportunities to screen potential friends, participate in the bisexual virtual community, come out and release stress, and look for romance. Apparently, for married bisexual men in Taiwan, the Internet offers an opportunity to anonymously manage sexual identity and solicit social support among other bisexuals. samenvatting: This report provides an overview of the current scholarship, including policy reports around the particular needs of LGBT people and the internet. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in the U.S. are core users of the internet and broadband technologies. Even as we have won important civil rights, LGBT people face ongoing challenges, such as employment discrimination and social marginalization. Of course the LGBT community is not a monolith but rather comprised of many other communities, be it race, religion, age, class or geographic location. As a result, the struggles that individual communities confront may be complicated when sexual orientation or gender identity are part of the mix. These challenges make accessing the internet across broadband technologies, as welll as providing protections to ensure privacy and safety when using these technologies, necessities for survival rather than luxuries.

'It Is What It Is' : Masculinity, Homosexuality, and Inclusive Discourse in Mixed Martial Arts  / Alex Channon, Christopher R. Matthews.

Journal of Homosexuality, 62 (2015) 7 (july), p. 936-956
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 62 (2015) 7 (july), p. 936-956
samenvatting: In this article we make use of inclusive masculinity theory to explore online media representations of male homosexuality and masculinity within the increasingly popular combat sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). Adopting a case-study approach, we discuss narratives constructed around one aspirational male MMA fighter, Dakota Cochrane, whose history of having participated in gay pornography became a major talking point on a number of MMA discussion/community Web sites during early 2012. While these narratives attempted to discursively rescue Cochrane?s supposedly threatened masculinity, highlighting both his 'true' heterosexuality and his prodigious fighting abilities, they also simultaneously celebrated the acceptance of homosexual men within the sport that Cochrane?s case implied. Thus, we suggest that these media representations of homosexuality and masculinity within MMA are indicative of declining cultural homophobia and homohysteria and an inclusive vision of masculinity, as previously described by proponents of inclusive masculinity theory.
